Biographical Sketch / Kurzbibliographie

Wolfgang Gaul is Professor em. of Business Administration and Management Science and was Head of the Institute of Decision Theory and Management Science at the Faculty of Economics, University of Karlsruhe (TH), now KIT (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology),  Karlsruhe, Germany.

He got his "Dissertation Dr.rer.nat." from the Institute of Applied Math­e­matics, Department of Probability Theory and Statistics, University of Bonn, in 1974.

In 1980 he received his "Habilitation" in Mathematics from the University of Bonn.

His publications and ongoing research interests include work in different areas:

– From a more theoretical point of view –

graph theory and network models, reliability theory, optimization, stochastic optimization, op­er­a­tions research, probability theory, statistics, sampling theory and data analysis.

– From a more application-oriented point of view­ –

applications of computer science, operations research and management science, e.g., in financial planning, in marketing about market research and con­sumer behaviour, product management, international marketing and man­agement, innovation and entre­pre­neur­ship, pre-test and test market model­ing, marketing management with emphasis on data analysis and operations research techniques, computer-assisted marketing and decision support, knowledge-based approaches for market research and marketing, e-business, recommender systems, and web intelligence,

as well as in other areas of business administration and economics.

In 2001, his wife Helga and he founded the "Helga und Wolfgang Gaul Stiftung" with the purpose of supporting excellent scientific research as well as helping handicapped persons who cannot take part in scientific life. 

"Ehrenmitgliedschaft" in GfKl (Gesellschaft für Klassifikation) was bestowed to him in 2007.

Since 2014 his wife and he are "Ehrenbürger" of KIT.
